How Does Team Driving Work?

With team driving, two different truckers will take turns behind the same wheel. While one person is driving, the other will either be in the passenger seat or the sleeper berth.

That way, the truck can stay on the road and the drivers can follow the hours-of-service regulations simultaneously. You will be paid based on the number of miles that you travel, and the earnings will be split between both drivers.

Most drivers will partner with a friend or a family member who also has a CDL, making husband-and-wife truck driving teams extremely common as well. If you don’t already have a partner or a friend who drives as well, your company may offer a team-matching service that will pair you with a driver based on personality, location, weekly pay, goals and preferred number of miles per week.

How Much Do Team Drivers Make?

According to Indeed, the average team driver makes $217 per day in the U.S. Rates may be higher or lower depending on the regions you drive in, but more experience typically means higher pay.

Is Team Driving Worth it?

There are quite a few benefits associated with team driving. Team drivers usually earn more even though they have to split their total pay with each other.

However, since there are two people on the road in the same truck, they can drive more miles than they would be able to handle by themselves. Solo drivers have to take a break for at least 10 hours per day, while team drivers can work around the clock.

Working as a team is much more efficient and provides greater security than driving alone. For instance, one driver can stay with the truck while the other grabs a quick bite, uses the bathroom or takes a shower.

Team drivers never have to worry about leaving their freight unattended. It’s also great to have companionship when you’re on the road for days on end. Driving as a team allows you to spend more quality time with a spouse or friends as well.

Make More Driving With a Partner Than Going Solo

Truck driving is a laborious activity that requires drivers to spend a great deal of hours on the road. But why not team up with a partner and earn more than you would working on your own? Not only will you get to take care of more priority loads, but you can rest easy knowing you have someone you can trust by your side the entire time.

Why do team drivers get paid more?
