Aukey DR01 1080p Dash Cam Review

Whether you are a commercial driver or simply have a long commute to work, dash cams are a great way of protecting yourself in the event of an accident. Dash cams provide you with video evidence of the chain of events that led up to the collision.

This footage can be invaluable, especially if you or another person were injured during the incident. However, finding the right dash cam for your needs can be tough.

With that in mind,  we have created this thorough review of one of the most popular dash cams on the market today: the Aukey DR01. We highlight what this camera does well and discuss potential limitations that you need to be aware of to make an informed purchasing decision in this Aukey DR01 1080p Dash Cam Review.

How Does Aukey DR01 1080p Dash Cam Work?

The Aukey DR01 1080p dash cam is extremely user-friendly. You can mount it to your dash using the included adhesive pad, or you can attach it to the windshield with the provided suction cup. The DR01 relies on a mini USB power cable and comes with a cigarette lighter charger for use in older cars.

Once the device is plugged in and attached to your windshield/dash, it will automatically come on when you start your car. The device records in a loop, which means that all old video is deleted when the camera runs out of storage space.

However, the camera also includes a built-in motion sensor designed to detect sudden changes in momentum. When a change in momentum is detected, the camera will “lock” that video clip so that it does not get deleted.

Aukey DR01 1080p Dash Cam FAQs

To help you learn more about this product, we’ve answered several frequently asked questions about the Aukey DR01 1080p dash cam below.

How Do You Set Up an Aukey DR01 1080p Dash Cam?

Setting up the Aukey DR01 only takes a few minutes.

To use the suction cup method, clean and dry your windshield before attaching the device. When using the adhesive pad, carefully remove all debris from your dash and dry the area.

Once you have mounted the device using your preferred method, insert the SD card and plug the camera into your selected power source.

You will be able to choose between several video quality options. Higher resolutions record at a lower frame rate and vice versa. When selecting your frame rate, set the time and date on your camera for accurate documentation.

You will need to purchase a memory card separately. Aukey recommends a Class 10 microSD card. Class 10 cards are designed specifically for HD video recording. We recommend a Class 10 card with 64GB or 128GB of memory.

How Do You Stop Recording on the Aukey DR01 1080p Dash Cam?

The Aukey DR01 will continue to record while plugged into a power source, even when your car is turned off. If you want to stop recording altogether, then you must unplug the device. Make sure that you remember to do so.

Otherwise, the camera can drain your battery if you do not drive your vehicle for several days.

Does Aukey DR01 1080p Dash Cam Record When the Car Is Off?

Yes, the DR01 dash cam will continue recording, even if the car is off. It has a built-in motion sensor that will detect things such as pedestrians and other vehicles. If you want to completely shut off the DR01, you must unplug it.

How Do You Update Aukey DR01 Firmware?

The Aukey DR01 does not have Wi-Fi capabilities, so you must plug it into your computer to update the firmware. Periodically check Aukey’s website, as they release firmware updates throughout the year.

What Does the Yellow Amber Triangle on Aukey DR01 Mean?

The yellow amber triangle on the Aukey DR01 allows you to manually lock recordings in the event of an accident. While the built-in motion sensor should do this for you, the button will perform the same task.

If you are involved in a traffic crash and can still access the button, we recommend pressing it to save your video.

Performance Factors of Aukey DR01 1080p Dash Cam

The Aukey DR01 produces quality HD video that works great in low-light conditions. It also has a very accurate motion detector and ignition detection. Perhaps the most appealing component of the Aukey DR01 is the compact design. It can easily be concealed behind your rearview mirror so that it does not obstruct your view.
