How it works
In asset-based lending, the borrower pledges its assets as collateral to secure the loan. The lender assesses the value of these assets, often applying a discount to account for potential depreciation or difficulties in liquidation. The approved loan amount is then typically a percentage of the assessed asset value. The loan is repaid over time, and if the borrower fails to repay, the lender may seize and sell the pledged assets to recover their money.
Asset-based lending types
In the trucking industry, the two most commonly used forms of asset-based lending are likely to be equipment financing and accounts receivable financing. Inventory and real estate asset-based lending are two additional viable, but lesser-known, options.
Accounts receivable financing
This type of lending involves using a company's accounts receivable as collateral. Businesses often have a significant amount of money tied up in invoices that might not be paid for 30-90 days. Accounts receivable financing allows them to get a loan equivalent to a percentage of the value of these receivables, providing immediate cash flow to cover operational expenses.
Equipment financing
Equipment financing involves using the equipment owned by a company as collateral for the loan. This type of lending is often used by businesses needing to invest in expensive machinery or equipment. The financed equipment itself serves as collateral, reducing the risk for the lender.
Inventory financing
Inventory financing is when a company uses its inventory as collateral for the loan. This type of lending is particularly useful for businesses that need to invest in more inventory ahead of a peak selling period. It's commonly used by retail businesses or wholesalers with large inventories.
Real estate asset-based lending
Real estate asset-based lending is when the loan is secured by real estate owned by the borrower. This can include commercial, residential, or industrial properties. It's often used by businesses with significant real estate holdings.
