Transload

The process of transferring a load from one mode of transportation to another. Frequently the term is applied specifically to the practice of consolidating the content of three 40-foot inbound international container shipments into two domestic 53-foot containers or trailers for transcontinental delivery. Transloading has become a core component of supply chain strategy for big-box retailers, which have realized that inventory management benefits can exceed the traditional goal of transportation savings.
