Trailer on flatcar (TOFC)

A form of intermodal rail movement entailing the use of two or more modes of transportation to move a single shipment. Trailers are hauled by a Class 8 tractor at the beginning and the end of the move, first from port or shipper location to a railhead, and later, from railhead to receiver location. The trailer moves on the railroad on a flatcar during the rail portion of the move.
