International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL)

The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, commonly called MARPOL (short for MARine POLlution convention), is the main international convention aimed at preventing and minimizing pollution attributable to ships, whether accidental or resulting from routine operations. The original convention was adopted by the International Maritime Organization in 1973.
