Hours of service (HOS)

Federal regulation, controlled by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, limiting the number of hours a driver may operate a vehicle on active duty. HOS rules vary when carrying passengers and during national emergencies, but generally drivers may drive up to 11 hours per day, which must be followed by at least 10 consecutive hours off-duty before driving again. To drive beyond eight hours, drivers must have had a 30-minute break. Over a seven-day period drivers may drive up to 60 hours, or 70 hours in eight days.
