Backhaul (rail)

The practice of hauling a commodity, for example scrap steel, on the return trip from a train's primary route. Backhauling ensures that the optimum amount of goods is efficiently transported throughout the train's journey. In contrast, a headhaul refers to carrying freight initially loaded at the origin point to its destination.
