The successor to the Interstate Commerce Commission, the STB is a presidentially appointed, independent agency consisting of a three- to five-member committee that hears and rules on rail-related regulatory matters. The STB oversees the industry on all issues that the Department of Justice (which does not oversee the railroads) would evaluate in other industries.
